Laser Gum Depigmentation
People have different natural gum tones, and some may have dark gums. Dark gums may not always be
due to natural gum color but may occur due to an irritant or staining. Many people want to lighten their
gum color, which can be achieved by Gum depigmentation. This procedure is for bleaching or lightening
the gums.
Why do I need it?
Laser gum depigmentation is an elective cosmetic procedure that a person may choose to have if they want
to change the color of their gums. The reason for dark gums is the presence of melanin pigment in the
gum tissues. The gum depigmentation procedure removes this dark pigment and restores the gum to a
natural-looking pink color. Lasers are the most preferred though there are various methods like scalpel
surgical technique, bur abrasion method, etc. It is non-surgical, non-invasive, painless, and does not cause
any bleeding. Lasers provide the most effective, reliable, and predictable results than other methods of
gum depigmentation. They are safe and effective treatment modality providing optimal aesthetics with
minimal discomfort in people with gingival hyperpigmentation.
How long will it take?
The duration of treatment in laser gum depigmentation is specific to each patient and depends on the severity
of the pigmentation present and the areas. For example, it will be a quick process if you get a single spot
treated on the gums, whereas for someone who needs depigmentation on upper and lower gums, both will
take a longer duration for treatment.
How long does it take to recover? When can I get back to work?
Being a non-invasive and bloodless procedure, you can resume your normal activities immediately after
the treatment. Your dentist may provide you with some post-procedural instructions on how to take
care of your gums, what to eat, drink and how to brush your teeth, etc. But there may not be too many
restrictions, and you can get back to work easily.
What should the patient do before the treatment?
The only thing that you need to do before your treatment is to take good care of your oral hygiene to
prevent any gum problems.
What should the patient do after the treatment?
It typically takes 2 to 3 weeks for the final results of the depigmentation sessions to be apparent. If your
gums have very dark pigmentation, a second touchup session may be needed to obtain optimal results.
Most people can expect the treated areas to appear much lighter and pinker, and the results are longlasting
if adequately taken care of. So maintaining good oral hygiene, avoiding smoking, and tobacco
product usage is mandatory to maintain the results.
