Sleep Apnea in Dubai
Snoring is a common problem faced by a multitude of people, however, people snore for different reasons. It is crucial to understand the causative factor behind your snoring to evaluate the severity of the problem. Once the problem is identified, you can find the right solution to attain a quieter, deeper sleep. Sleep Apnea in Dubai could be one of the problems causing snoring.
Snoring can be caused by anything that narrows the breathing passages. This may include nasal congestion, enlarged tonsils, large uvula, deviated nasal septum, obesity, alcohol, smoking, etc.
Snoring, related to frequent interruption of breathing at night, may be a sign of obstructive sleep apnea. Your physician or a sleep specialist can diagnose if your snoring is related to sleep apnea or not.
Treatment approaches available for snoring and/or sleep apnea in Dubai
There are various solutions that may be recommended to you by your physician, sleep specialist, or your dentist.
● Mouth Exercises
Snoring most often is caused due to slackening of our muscles around the airway. In such cases, mouth exercises can be beneficial in strengthening mouth, tongue, and throat and building muscle tone in case of mild snoring.
● Positive Airway Pressure Devices
Continuous Positive Airway Pressure (CPAP). One of the most common treatments for sleep apnea in adults is the CPAP machine to keep your airway open during sleep. They pump pressurized air into a mask you wear, which in turn blows the air into your airway, thus preventing it from being obstructed.
Bi-PAP machines are similar to CPAP but contain varying pressure levels for exhaling and inhaling. Bi-PAP machines have “smart” controls to vary pressure according to need.
All of these positive airway pressure devices require a prescription and are effective in resolving sleep apnea in Dubai. However, wearing a PAP mask can be uncomfortable and cumbersome, and requires some getting used to.
● Anti-Snoring Mouthpieces
These are custom-fitted dental devices and lower jaw-positioners that can help open your airway by bringing your lower jaw or your tongue forward during sleep. For the best results, you will need to see a dentist who specializes in these devices. They hold your tongue or jaw in a stable
position so that it can’t block your airway while you sleep.
There are two types of anti-snoring mouthpieces:
Mandibular Advancement Devices:
These devices hold the lower jaw/ mandible in a forward position to avoid obstruction of your airway. Devices like the Silensor-sl belong to the mandibular advancement splints and are clinically proven to be effective with not only snoring but in mild to moderate Sleep apnea as well.
Tongue Retaining Devices:
These mouthpieces position the tongue and hold it in place so that it doesn’t fall back toward your throat blocking it.
Even though CPAP is considered the gold standard treatment for sleep apnea, the apparatus can be bothersome, especially if the machine is loud, or if the mask fits poorly. This is not only uncomfortable for the wearer but will affect their family members as well.
Custom-fitted oral appliances are often a good alternative in sleep apnea treatment for those who cannot tolerate CPAP, being more comfortable than CPAP. Needless to say, oral appliances are less expensive than CPAP or Bi-PAP machines. So consult a dentist or a sleep specialist today, if you
are struggling with snoring woes.
