March 9, 2024Laser Gingivectomy
Why do I need it?
Your dentist may recommend you to undergo laser gingivectomy treatment if you have gum recession due
to aging, infections, gum injury or gum diseases, gingival swelling, or inflamed gums. Laser gingivectomy
has shown rapid healing and reduced pain as compared to surgical methods. The procedure is bloodless
and provides good results. It is mainly performed as a cosmetic procedure to modify a smile, like in people
with gummy smiles. In cases where a crown needs to be given, but your tooth has a small height, laser
gingivectomy may also be required.
How long will it take?
The laser gingivectomy procedure takes 30 minutes to an hour, depending on the amount of gum tissue
removed. Minor modifications involving a single tooth may be completed in one session. Major gum
reshaping or removal in several teeth may require multiple visits, as your dentist may want a particular
area to heal before moving on to the next.
How long to recover? When can I get back to work?
The advantage of carrying out this procedure with a laser is that healing is rapid, so the recovery is quick.
You should be able to go home right away, and the process is performed under local anaesthesia. Usually,
there is minimal or no pain after the anaesthesia wears off, but you can always use over-the-counter
painkillers to relieve your pain. Applying a cold compress also helps ease the pain. Some dentists apply
dressings after the treatment. These will need to be changed regularly, as explained by your dentist. You
may be advised to eat a cold and soft diet for one day, but you should be able to eat everything normally
once your gum starts healing.
What should the patient do before the treatment?
Try to maintain good oral hygiene before your Laser Gingivectomy. You may also want to have a light meal
What should the patient do after the treatment?
Your dentist may instruct you to eat soft and cold food till your gums heal to avoid any irritation or trauma
to them. If you feel any pain, you can apply a cold compress or take pain medications to ease the pain. You
might be prescribed some antibiotics to prevent any gum infections. It is advisable to use saline solution
to wash the area and keep it free of any bacteria or irritating substances. If your pain or swelling does not
subside within a week, you must see your dentist to ensure that your gums are healing well. Lastly, good oral
hygiene, i.e., brushing and flossing religiously, and avoiding smoking and alcohol consumption, will ensure a
smooth healing process.
