Helping the Community
We recently visited the Family Village Orphans managed by the Community Development Authority for a Dental Care Education Day. Watch the video to see how it went.
This week we visited DTEC at Silicon Oasis to speak at their event, Advancing Women's Health and Wellbeing. There we spoke about dental health and its relationship with whole-body health.
It was a fantastic event and we enjoyed it immensely. We would like to thank the organisers DTEC (Dubai Technology Entrepreneur Campus), and all the attendees.
The Importance Of Good Dental Care And Whole Body Health
By reducing the body's resistance to infection, diabetes puts your gums at risk. Gum disease appears to be more frequent and severe among people who have diabetes.
Research shows that people who have gum disease have a harder time controlling their blood sugar levels. Regular periodontal care can improve diabetes control.
Oral problems, such as painful mucosal lesions, are common in people who have HIV/AIDS.
This bone-weakening disease is linked with periodontal bone loss and tooth loss. Certain drugs used to treat osteoporosis carry a small risk of damage to the bones of the jaw.
Worsening oral health is seen as Alzheimer's disease progresses.
Dental and Whole Body Health
The connection between oral health and overall health
The mouth teams with bacteria, which is the entry point for digestion etc. The body's natural defences and good oral health will keep bacteria under control. Oral infections can happen like tooth decay and gum disease. Saliva plays a part in defending as well. Taking artificial medicines can reduce the amount of saliva.
Major links between diseases and oral health
This infection of the inner lining of your heart chambers or valves (endocardium) typically occurs when bacteria or other germs from another part of your body, such as your mouth, spread through your bloodstream and attach to certain areas in your heart.
Although the connection is not fully understood, some research suggests that heart disease, clogged arteries and stroke might be linked to the inflammation and infections that oral bacteria can cause.
Pregnancy and birth complications:
Periodontitis has been linked to premature birth and low birth weight.
Certain bacteria in your mouth can be pulled into your lungs, causing pneumonia and other respiratory diseases.

The Advantages Of Digital Dentistry
- Allows a dentist to digitally scan your teeth and to be able to view them at any angle or direction which dramatically improves understanding of any issues.
- The files can be immediately viewed after scanning.
- Allows dentists to create digital designs for and implants which can then be 3D printed. This reduced the time and increases the accuracy which is great for patients.
The Digital Dentist
Dr Hafsa Alidrissi (dentist in Dubai) specialises in digital dentistry which improves the patient experience, by reducing visits, improving the quality of the dental work, and keeping recovery time to a minimum.
Digital dentistry using the CEREC technique allows the dentist to electronically scan the mouth, create a 3D model, and produce the finished dental solutions in record time.

Publications/Case Studies/Additional Material
A 38 year old male patient had the primary complaint of pain when chewing and interproximal food impaction after a relapse of teeth movement, post orthodontic treatment 8 years ago. The patient’s medical history did not reveal any systemic diseases. Upon intra-oral clinical assessment, findings revealed rotation of the maxillary left premolars and interproximal spacing. Intra-oral biting radiographs revealed occlusal-distal (OD) caries of both premolars.
