Night guards are dental appliances covering your teeth that your doctor provides for bruxism. Bruxism is the harmful habit of teeth grinding that is commonly observed at nighttime. So your dentist may fabricate customized mouthguards created to fit your teeth perfectly. These nightguards can help anyone who clenches and grinds their teeth while sleeping. The various types of nightguards are soft nightguards, hard nightguards, dual laminate nightguards, acrylic nightguards, thermoplastic nightguards, etc.
Why do I need it?
Occasional teeth grinding may not cause concerns, but a long-term, consistent grinding habit, i.e., Bruxism, may lead to many issues. There may be loss of tooth enamel, broken teeth, sore muscles, gum problems, facial pain, loss of sleep, and in severe cases, loss of teeth. So to protect your teeth, it is essential to break the habit of bruxism. Night guards help by covering your teeth surfaces and protecting them. They also help in decreasing the severity of this grinding by creating a barrier between teeth surfaces. The night guard helps to lighten the tension and provide a cushion to the muscles in the jaw when you clench.
As per the current literature, the cycle of bruxism cannot be stopped by the nightguards alone. However, nightguards significantly protect teeth from breaking and chipping during static or dynamic clenching.
How long will it take?
Typically two appointments may be needed for customized night guards. In the first appointment, the dentist will take a dental impression and send the model to the lab to fabricate the nightguard. In the second appointment, the fitting of the nightguard is done. In clinics equipped with CAD-CAM systems, this can sometimes be reduced to a single appointment.
How long to recover? When can I get back to work?
These nightguards are removable appliances, and no treatment is performed directly on your teeth. Wearing them regularly at night can help break the bruxism habit and protect your teeth’ surface.
